ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite (FIREWALL) - $50 - Source - Turn off Windows XP firewall and install the robust  with two-way firewall and other great security protective features.

Webroot SpySweeper (ANTISPYWARE SHIELD/SCANNER) - $30 Source - offers a very effective and proactive shield to block 12 threats from effecting your system security. The newest version works well with multiple accounts and LUA limited accounts in XP.  You shouldn’t use more than one shield program that is resident in memory from startup for performance reasons. Webroot's spyware not only blocks spyware from implanting but also scans and removes any that do.

The Ultimate Troubleshooter (TUT) - $29 - Source - lets you easily examine all Services, Start up Programs with an explanation about what many of these are so you can decide if they are good or bad to keep loading up. You can view your hardware profile. Then you can print or export these lists to HTML, TEXT or Excel file. You can compare current lists with future ones to help you see changes that are made. 

Registry Mechanic - $30 - Source - scans your registry to clean and fix problems

AutoRuns - free - Source - shows start up files to help you detect and remove malware or unnecessary programs

HiJackThis - free -  Source - shows start up files and browser helper objects to help you detect and remove malware or unnecessary programs. Difficult stealth programs can be discovered this way.

Filechecker - free - Source - keeps a database of your important system type files so you can be alerted if anything attempts to overwrite them with malicious ones.

Driver Agent - $30 - Source - Web subscription to site provides instant access to the most CURRENT device drivers for your computer. Driver Agent instantly provides the correct and current driver to you for immediate download with a click on the link provided. Update drivers for devices to work better.

Process Explorer - free - Source - Ever wondered which program has a particular file or directory open? Now you can find out. Process Explorer shows you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded. The unique capabilities of Process Explorer make it useful for tracking down DLL-version problems or handle leaks, and provide insight into the way Windows and applications work.

SpywareBlaster - free - Source -  utility that cuts many Spyware delivery mechanisms off at the knees! It prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, tracking cookies and other potentially unwanted software installed when visiting some web sites. It restricts the actions of potentially bad sites in Internet Explorer (IE) by populating a list of identified bad sites in your browser Restricted Zone so they cannot install Active-X script changes. It adds a list of know, ad-tracking cookie sites to restrict them in both IE and Mozilla Firefox browsers. It checks your IE settings and alerts you when major security settings are not at the recommended safe level, and will make the changes for you. It protects your IE home page from being changed. You can save an encrypted copy of your Hosts File and your browser settings for restore if they become altered or corrupted. NOTE: IE7 now avoids much of the Active-X problem noted above.

RoboForms - $30 - Source password management tool. Web site Login accounts and passwords are maintained in encrypted files. Click on the link and you are automatically logged in with the password being passed into the web page form via encrypted process. You can also print out this list of accounts and passwords to store in a fire safe, as well as additionally backing up the passcard files for the accounts to another safe location. You can also generate extremely tough passwords with this program. You never need to write down passwords again! 

BelarcAdvisor - free - Source - program that quickly performs a survey scan of your system and reports all software, licenses, keys and security patches installed. This is an easy way to help you verify that specific patches are installed. 

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer - free - Source - highly recommended tool you download and install from Microsoft. MBSA is a FREE, best practices vulnerability scanner assessment tool for Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003. Once installed, run it to scan your system. Any vulnerabilities found are provided a link with a description where to obtain the patch to correct it.  It also finds security weaknesses beyond missing patches and makes suggestive corrections. 

Karen's Directory Printer - free - Source - lets you print out the directory tree of your files in a folder.

Servant Salamander - free - Source - lets you compare two different subdirectories within a split-screen to see what files match or are missing. You can delete files you select to help you manage folders of files.

Firefox - free - Source - safer than IE7 and well-liked browser alternative to Microsoft Internet Explorer

Netcraft - free - Source - anti-phishing tool to alert you to web sites that attempt to phish information from you. Protect your savings from Phishing attacks. See the hosting location and Risk Rating of every site you visit. Help defend the Internet community from fraudsters. 
The Netcraft Toolbar community is effectively a giant neighborhood watch scheme, empowering the most alert and most expert members to defend everyone within the community against phishing frauds. Once the first recipients of a phishing mail have reported the target URL, it is blocked for community members as they subsequently access the URL. Widely disseminated attacks (people constructing phishing attacks send literally millions of electronic mails in the expectation that some will reach customers of the bank) simply mean that the phishing attack will be reported and blocked sooner through use of community members using a tool like Netcraft.
